Pretty cool. After googling it looks like it's a Knudsen pump which I had to look up . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knudsen_pump
On quick glance, I don't think the vacuum devices are actually doing the detecting, they are just carefully controlling the air molecules in the local vicinity and pushing them to the detector in a controller manner. (What the detector is, or if they even have one, I dont' know).
I think now that they managed to fit 100,000 individual mini-pumps on something the size of a penny, now they have a good sampling mechanism, but still need to come up with the detector or unit as a whole, so to speak...

I know very little about vacuum pumps but I don't understand how a vacuum pump can smell something. Is there some inherent feature of vacuum pumps that allow them to detect smell?
