I thought it was April 1 when I read this. I have no problem with people trying to fix themselves from fatal or debilitating disease. I am fine with diy gene therapy and other drastic measures in such cases. Have at it.

If you have no sense and can't conduct a risk benefit analysis. Risk = I will need a white cane for the rest of my life, benefit= I can see in the dark better for a little while. Decide which eye you want to be blind in if things don't go as well as you hoped. Then experiment on only that one eye. Then you will have one working eye left.

Or what if you get virusses onto your eye. HSV in the eye can be really bad.
You might dissolve the substance in listerine, which should kill bugs and was shown to deactivate virusses. Though I doubt there has been experiencecon listerin in eyes.
Maybe ethanol + zink ions (also deactivates some virusses)
