Re: [DIYbio] Re: DIY lab in India

I'm coming to Mumbai at the end of January. Will drop by.

Hi Ujjwal,

I think the DIY ethic has been increasing quite quickly around here. We have had quite a few inquiries, though we had of course done (and are still doing) the workshop-seminar-exhibition circuit. Not as many takers in pure synthetic biology as in interdisciplinary work: sensors and the like, ideally linked to electronics. But this may be a Mumbai thing. If you do set up are become part of a lab in Delhi, I'd love to collaborate. Our web address is http://sarbilbas.in.

FYI we started nearly a year ago and are a multidisciplinary lab: we also have chemists (material scientists) and electronics people working on projects, besides the bioctech/molecular bio etc. I think, in India, the DIY ethic is more noticeable in engineers, especially from the traditional disciplines, rather than pure scientists and biologists because of the horrible way our degrees, especially in the latter fields are structured, what with the lack of emphasis on critical thinking. You'll probably have to branch out into areas other than bio to attract people to the lab. The biologists will follow!

Do get in touch if interested.

Regards,
Reshma

Hi Naresh,
I have been wanting to establish a space in India since January now but have not been able to follow up on it. I think we're still a little far away from establishing a self sustaining lab because awareness of DIYBio is extremely poor in our country. We first need to conduct some workshops and spread awareness till we reach a point where there would be enough people interested in space. While Bangalore seems to have a lot of biohackers, most work in propagating SynBio is taking place in New Delhi. The Department of Biotechnology is particularly interested in spreading awareness and JNU is planning to open a dedicated department in the coming years. Where are you right now. Maybe we could have a chat over Skype.

Hello fellow researchers,
I could like to introduce myself as Naresh Rambabu, I am a graduate student from ESPCI. I am in an idea to initiate a DIY lab in India. Since I am new to initiating a DIY lab in my locality. I am looking forward for you suggestions and comments that I should keep in mind for establishing a DIY lab in India.

Cheers
Naresh
