[DIYbio] Signal processing of DNA sequence

Dear all,

Is there anyone in the group with experience / expertise in signal processing - specifically  digital signal processing of DNA sequences aka symbolic signal processing?

I am dissatisfied with a widely used bioinformatics tool for discovering a certain type of transposon element, and have come across signal processing tools such as wavelet transformation, Fast Fourier Transform etc. for classifying DNA sequences.

However, I want to know whether these same or similar tools may also be used for discovery purposes, which precedes the classification step.

Thanks,
Tom
