[DIYbio] Re: Advice for Counsel on OSHW 501c3?

I used to work for the IRS, specifically in the division that dealt with Tax Exempts.  My work was with employee plans but I still have some contacts in exempt organizations which would cover the 501(c)(3) foundation.  The process is slow.  Depending on your needs I may be able to assist with the setup of the 501(c)(3) foundation or at least point you in the right direction.  Please send me a email if you want to discuss further.

Subject: [Legal] Advice for Counsel on OSHW 501c3
To: legal@lists.openhardware.org

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone can provide advice for good legal counsel on forming a 501c3 foundation for a particular open-source hardware project.  (The foundation would ensure the IP remained community and free, and would provide grants to projects and companies working on the technology.)  Counsel does not need to be free, but there is a limited budget at this stage, and the foundation would likely need to be done before fundraising can begin for the project.

All apologies and request for advice of where to ask if this is the wrong place!

Thanks in advance,
Chris
