I suspect it's "bigger = better", as larger electrode area means less
electrode obfuscation due to bubble formation.

I also think distance from the gel is more useful than electrode
diameter, as it gives some room for the field to even out before it
"hits" DNA. But that could be voodoo magic thinking so take with a
pinch of salt. Larger gaps also mean higher voltages are needed, so
it's maybe not worth it.
