Re: [DIYbio] Measuring plant voltages

Hi Carlos,

The SpikerBox is an AC amp, and can't record the slow potentials of plants (for example, the action potential of a Venus Fly Trap is ~ 1 second long).

But, you are in luck. You only need about 100-200 gain to amplify the voltages of plants such as fly traps and sensitive mamomas.
There is a book on "plant electrophysiology"
http://www.springer.com/life+sciences/plant+sciences/book/978-3-540-32717-2

That is a bit expensive but perhaps you can find it at your local University Library.

Cheers,
Tim

SpikerBox works very well with plant action potentials. If you google Ivan Henriques, you may find his recent art work on a plant controlled robot. It takes the signal moves the not in a random direction. Its a simple DIY box and its very fun to play with. Good luck!

Subject: [DIYbio] Measuring plant voltages

Hi gang,

I'm hoping there is someone here with some knowledge of plant biology. I would be very grateful for any advice, references, etc on the subject of measuring plant voltages and other properties (e.g. pH). I'm thinking a GSR circuit using a wheatstone bridge and op-amp will do but I would appreciate any schematics/diagrams, etc

I would also like to see discussion of parameters, variables, experiments most galvanically active plants, etc. I am particularly interested in measuring voltages and biochemistry in wetland/marshy areas.

Any suggestions concerning other (simple) techniques for real-time feedback from plants would be appreciated.

Thanks!
-Carlos
