The best way to learn is by doing. Get after it. Setup a meeting at your local library or take out an ad in the newspaper and get some people interested together and talk to eachother. Someone might know someone and you might be able to snag some equipment donations and get started.

We had a broad discussion about that last night at our weekly open lab evening in Amsterdam. Currently we are running a bootcamp for coordinators of BioHack Academy labs in the fall (www.waag.org/biohackacademy).It seems like most spaces take the "fitness-club-model" as the primary approach. So charging monthly membership fees. Others go more for a co-working space, or even a startup-incubator.At the Open Wetlab we use the space as a facility for our research on open source biotech, and open it up to the public as a free service.Whatever approach you may choose, remember that having a local community is key to success, so it most likely is best to ask the people around you what they are looking for.You might also want to take a look at: http://openlab-blueprint.org

- What Financial needs and funding?
- Key success factors?
- Key failure factors?
