They are easy enough to find with a soil sample and some TSA plates. Collect a soil sample (grazing or pasture land seems best) add about 10 grams to 90 ml water, shake it up real good and let it sit about an hour, shake again and dilute it to about 10^4 heat to 80C for 6 min to kill off most non spores. Take the dilution and spread 100ul on a TSA plate. We had a summer intern process about 200 samples this way and about 30% of them had some of these types of colonies. Plus its kinda a neat project anyway to see whats in the dirt.
As always take care as some of these spore formers are not so innocuous primarily B. cereus and B. anthracis so be sure to autoclave the plates when finished.
I wish I could send one but, being they were isolated by a private business it would not be allowed.

Can anyone send us a culture of these beautiful fractal pattern forming bacteria? They're spore-formers, so even a piece of dried-up agar plate might work...--Patrik
