Hey there,

thanks for spreading the link Cathal! Let me briefly expand on it:

Currently openSNP is hosting ~2100 genetic data sets (largely 23andMe genotypings, but also some exome data sets), which translates to around 1.5 billion genetic variants stored. Alongside this data, the database contains crowdsourced phenotypes and even some activity/sleep data collected through Fitbits. All the data is made available under CC0 (the codebase is MIT-licensed).

We're very happy with the growth of openSNP, but at the same time this means that our small server running all of the project is hitting its limits right now, making using the website a tedious ordeal at times. So far we're running openSNP largely from our own money made at our day jobs. For most of us involved in the project this means working in badly paid academic jobs we're unable to shell in much more money. This is why we're reaching out to get some help in getting the costs covered, which hopefully will help us expand the computing power behind openSNP.

As Cathal mentioned, we're not needing much money and even a single dollar a month is already a huge help for us: https://www.patreon.com/openSNP
Feel free to get in touch any time you have further questions regarding the project etc. :-)

Cheers,
Bastian

Hey all, Bastian from OpenSNP has opened a patreon page for the prpject to help crowdfund its ongoing growth. Commit even $1 a month to help fund their work creating an open science platform for genomic:phenotypic datamining!
