Android tablets can host OTG USB connections (including USB to serial converters and USB to parallel converters).

And they have a microphone and earphone jack, which you can send and receive data on, using a bit of software.

And at $37, you save two bucks.

WiFi, Bluetooth, 1024x600 touch screen, quad core 1.3 GHz processor, half a gig of RAM, 8 gigs of flash, TF card slot, and front (0.3 mp) and back (2 mp) cameras.

I wonder if wires are needed these days with the ESP8266 or ESP32 (wifi microcontrollers). That Fire tablet has Wi-Fi... so things could be even more flexible.
