Re: [DIYbio] Anyone have experience with cryo storage in LN dewar?

The info on the SC Series around page 22 shows models like the SC 33/26 that holds 33 liters and consumes ~130 mL/day. That depends heavily upon use and other factors, but it's a good guide.

Sure, I'm at the University of Minnesota. I've used LN2 storage for mammalian cell lines and for protein crystal storage. I've also had -80 freezers available that I've used for other applications. (e.g. storing proteins and bacterial cell stocks). There is a lot more room in a big upright -80 than most LN2 dewars, so the LN2 was reserved for samples that could benefit from the colder temperatures. I'm sure the bacteria and protein stocks would have done fine in the LN2 or the -80.

Hey Bryan,

Thanks for the advice. I think that is pretty ok consumption-wise. I guess this could be a great alternative to a -80. Do you mind me asking where you are based? Were you using it for storage? Did you also have a -80 available? Sorry for all the questions! I just feel like this could be the answer to our problems!

I'm sure the consumption depends on size, but I remember topping up the Dewar I used to use every week or two.

Anyone have experience with cryogenic storage using a liquid nitrogen dewar? Do you have experience of their LN consumption daily with/without opening?

We don't have the money for a -80 freezer and we thought that a dewar could be a good alternative since we have ready access to LN. We found a second hand dewar with a storage attachment:

If you have knowledge of suppliers based in UK that might have this kind of equip second hand we would be most appreciative. We are based in Ireland so suppliers need to be based in UK or worst case continental Europe. Sadly I don't know if we can afford shipping from US :(
