If in the U.S., register a new business name and you are the P.I. For a couple bucks extra, it can be an LLC. The U.S. has incredibly easy laws allowing citizens to start new businesses, use the opportunity, in fact, it's a sin to not use such opportunity. Publish the paper(s) with this business affiliation. Later on, you might find that you suddenly have people offering you money for your business's services (i.e. paying customers). Depending on what you are working on, this might happen as quickly as just a few weeks.
If you already work for an institution then having a separate entity may allow for easier clearance of any IP as unrelated (and not claimable).
