EtBr is overdemonized. Many reagents chemists used to work with
make it look like weak mouthwash.
Anything detecting DNA will likely intercalate, and do
pi-pi complex things in order to be visible, so it
almost certainly has an impact on base reading/frame shift,
and hence more or less mutagenic.
