[DIYbio] Magnetic Fibers Easy DIY

DIY Magnetic Fiber Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJjJ9_ejUuw

After a trying several methods, this is what I found to be the easiest way of producing DIY magnetic fibers. For those of you not up to date, I am working on components and materials for building a DIY ionic water computer. Here is a recent review, I like to call it "Chapter 1"( http://dscript.org/ionic-water-computer ), I'm working on DIY magnetic plastics that will be used in the next round of components.

Ingredient : DIY Magnetic Powder, how to make and store: http://youtu.be/wlcP1GhVvjM  , http://youtu.be/aKgGEaSve8Y

It is really quite simple actually, first you need a pile of melted plastic, hot gluegun gluestick works great.

melt a batch of it, here I just use a lighters and a crude burning method, but it can be done in a proper vessel and heated to melting point.

Then just mix in magnetic power (Here we use the same DIY magnetite power we show how to make and store in earlier videos)

After that let it cool a bit and before it starts hardening on the surface too much, just tap a fibrous material to it and then pull. the fibers will catch the glue and pull a long strand of glue.

The fibers cool quickly and are quite flexible and elastic. Using different pulling material and speed produces fibers of different diameters.

Doping the glue stick material with other stuff also affects the fiber qualities. You can easily also melt in other types of plastic or anything you like.

Now that I have DIY magnetic putty and magnetic fibers. A few more materials and we should have a good base of magnetic plastics to use in the water computer.
