I think the great irony about local food is that lots of consumers
will
drive a long way to go to a co-op or farmer's market to find locally-
grown food
with the belief they are helping the environment and reducing
transportation costs. Reducing transportation costs is one of the
main
reasons given for preferring local food.

But you can easily calculate that the savings of shipping 80 tons of
food 20 miles by truck instead of 1000 miles by truck are wiped out
by having 8,000 consumers drive 10 miles instead of 1 mile to pick it
up.
