Not just int'l shipping but the device itself.

I think miniPCR has an enclosure design that is nice looking,
but with laborious assembly time required.
Enclosures for a specialized thing with air flow paths, light paths, etc
need to be a custom shape which can be made by milling machine in plastic in
low volumes, then the same shape molded via a mid volume injection-mold-tool
in aluminum like protomold sells. Whoever is assembling that clear acrylic
is getting paid, which is driving the sell price up.

RE: [DIYbio] miniPCR is live on kickstarter

The obviously have to ship it by paddle-boat. Seems super reasonable if that's the method in question...

I don't want to seem rude but that price point is ridiculous. Not just int'l shipping but the device itself. I STILL have yet to hear of any passable justification for the device being so damn expensive for what it is...or what its not. I wouldn't even be able to do an overnight ligation since it can't get colder that ~22C. I'd pay $250 retail. Maximum.

RE: [DIYbio] Rich Lee, with magnetic earphone Implants, shares details

I wonder how he isn't getting any side effects from the metals in the magnet. PTFE coating like surgical implants?

Subject: [DIYbio] Rich Lee, with magnetic earphone Implants, shares details

Rich Lee has three magnetic implants in his body -- two in his ears, which he uses as "headphones."

"The implant in my fingertip is surrounded by sensitive nerves. Whenever the magnet passes by an electromagnetic field it moves in response. AC currents are especially noticeable. It almost feels like a texture. Basically it allows you to feel magnetic fields, which is an otherwise invisible world.

The implants in my ears are a bit different. I use a special transmitting coil which is worn around my neck or inside of a hat. That coil is plugged in to the headphone port of a device, such as a mobile phone. Sound from the device is carried through the coil in the form of electricity which creates a magnetic field. This of course causes the magnets in my ears to twitch and actually creates sound that I can hear in my implants. It is really cool. Most normal speakers work on a similar principle, except they usually use a magnet to move a coil, whereas I use the coil to move the magnet."

Re: [DIYbio] Experiments for PCR at home or school education

Why not try plant barcoding. If you have a pcr machine and gel box, buy some taq master mix off ebay, ship primers to a local business or school from life technologies value oligos, and send extract genomic dna from local plants, run the barcoding primers, extract the amplified dna, and send it to the dna barcoding initiative for sequencing. The do huge discounts for schools IIRC.

[DIYbio] Rich Lee, with magnetic earphone Implants, shares details
