[DIYbio] Re: Biohacking 101 - What do you think of this script?

As a general impression, I really think an introductory episode should be more exciting.  Rather than diving into definitions, but not really covering any of these huge topics at all, I feel like it would be more engaging to capture the viewer's attention by talking about:
  • the flashy parts.  The glow-in-the-dark things.  The rebellious basement bio-hackers growing wonderful things in their fridges.  The creation of new organisms, etc.  I saw an article the other day about cows modified to produce spider silk in their milk.  That's crazy, and it gets people interested.
  • the fact that it's all around you.  The laundry powders, drugs, fuels, materials Meow-Ludo mentioned.  The production of a shih tzu from a gray wolf, the GMO food, etc.
  • the controversy.  The questions regarding the safety of DIY bio.  Ethical questions about synthetic life forms, cloning, fetal screenings and human genome manipulation, "playing god", etc.
  • the future.  The possibilities.  Designer organisms, super-humans, the end of aging, the end of world hunger, etc.
Don't go into those things in depth -- just mention them, show some cool videos or pictures, anything exciting or cool.  Then take topics like "Genetic Engineering" and "Synthetic Biology" and make episodes out of them.

Try to think about making it fun and interesting, because otherwise I think it will be hard to get people to watch it.  Think Mythbusters.
