I like GelGreen.  Cheaper than SybrSafe, supposedly just as safe and brighter.


There is some autofluoresence when the dye is in solution but it has a different peak than when it binds to DNA.  You can fool around with qPCR-lite by adding the dye to a PCR mix and checking fluorescence after each step.

Standards are necessary - but can they be treated sequence independent?
