The book 'Mycelium Running' by Paul Stamets talks a lot about
bio-filters, though using fungal mats/matrices rather than plants.
It's a great book and it cites it's sources very well.
You could use a reporter strain that fluoresces or breaks down X-gal
in response to a small molecule, add the small molecule above your
bioFilter and see if your report gives a weaker signal from the
filtrate.
