Hi all,
I'm trying to get a hydrophobic compound, specifically beta carotene at present, into e.coli. I realize I could synthesize it inside the cell but was thinking of doing this so I would know the exact initial concentration to benefit subsequent measurements. However I am not sure how to do it. Beta carotene is very insoluble in water, and though it dissolves in hexane or ethanol, this would seem to be toxic to the cell. Any ideas on an approach/protocol?

-- BTW Vitamin Water seems to be able to dissolve at least a little bit somehow (http://flavored-waters.com/Flavored_Waters/Glaceau_Vitamin_Water/Glaceau_Essential.asp).
