It is probably cheaper in both time and money just to buy it. Gold biotech probably has some.

Hello everyone, I'm a former DIY-enthusiast, just getting started rebuilding my lab after returning home from college (had to sell all my lab equipment for money...). Recently joined the DIYbio group - nice to meet you all.
Right now, I'm focusing on culturing a strain of soil bacteria, B. sphaericus, that can deposit calcite using urea and a basic calcium salt. There's some work being on self-healing construction materials, and I wanted to see if I could make a simple protocol for isolating and culturing the bacteria. In theory, one could use a 3D bioprinter to 'print' a self-healing concrete that could be slowly grown into whatever architectural shape you would want.
So I'm trying to recreate a selective medium (BATS) described by Yousten et al. (PDF attached) - they describe using streptomycin sulfate as a selective antibiotic.
I noticed on eBay that they sell streptomycin as a pesticide for plants:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fertilome-Fire-Blight-Spray-2-oz-streptomycin-sulfate-/300730782923?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4604f394cb
and there was a past thread talking about using veterinary grade streptomycin (I don't know where I'd source that - a pet store? farm supplies?). Since the pesticides probably contain other junk (says 21.2% streptomycin), I wanted to see if anyone knew an extraction protocol for strep. using OTC materials.
