The Gates Foundation does accept applications from for-profits for some (if not all) of their grants... the award process takes the form of periodic invoicing in contrast to a simple grant award in the case of a non-profit.
They do not accept applications from individuals though; an organizational affiliation is required (though many non-profits are happy to handle disbursement of a grant for you for a nominal overhead).
I know this information is valid for their Grand Challenges Explorations grants; I cannot speak to other programs.
Best,
Paul

I'm 99.9% sure the Gates foundation does not take solicitations from
individuals or for-profits.
