Role : Solution Architect
Location : NYC
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Manager of Infrastructure Design and Standards, the candidate filling this position will have engineering level technical responsibility for activities in support of the Department of Education's overall infrastructure planning, configuration, engineering and design. The Solution Engineer will develop and coordinate integration of new technology, deployments, conduct performance monitoring and support processes for infrastructure technologies in the more than 1,700 schools. The Solution Engineer will provide expertise in development of standards documentation and will work with constituents to define and document processes.
Reports to: Manager of Infrastructure Design and Standards
Direct Reports: None
Key Relationships: Works with senior developers and Solution Architect to support the lifecycle of the current infrastructure designs and standards. Works with Senior Network and Systems Engineers to build, support and maintain new and existing systems. Works with Network Operations, Server and Storage, Wireless and IPDVS groups to develop and implement new standards and designs to improve or streamline the interconnectivity between DOE's data centers and the individual network nodes. Works with the PMO and business owners to develop new projects (including proposals, designs and implementation plans).
Responsibilities
- Manages a variety of technical tasks, as part of designing the infrastructure in existing schools. Provide technical support of both current and future needs.
- Provides expertise to Solution Architect to help identify and translate system and business requirements into design documents and drawings.
- Produces highly technical client-oriented design documents to illustrate solution strategy and deployments plans.
- Surveys market landscape for current trends, directions and methods to improve and enhance existing network, server, storage and end-point infrastructure.
- Develops, organizes and performs extensive testing scenarios for various solutions.
- Validates equipment and assures that the specifications in the core network and school designs meet the standards and organizational goals.
- Serves as the in-house expert and authority in troubleshooting complex infrastructure technologies.
- Works with the telecommunication team on developing IP telephony standards.
- Collaborates with Project Managers during the deployment phase of the project, to document the installation, customization, and integration efforts.
- Leads the creation of the configuration deployment procedures and trains integration and field engineers on various networking configurations
- Uses the knowledge of ITIL processes and methodology to develop project's structure and documentation.
- Provides technical expertise, including but not limited to the following:
- Cisco Nexus technologies.
- Junos OS.
- VMware vSphere.
- Enterprise storage/SAN
- Cisco IP Telephony.
- Contributes to the creation process of technical RFP and RFI documents.
- Contributes to the creation process and maintains NYCDOE 5 year Strategic Plan standards. Works to develop RFP documentation to implement solutions in accordance with the Strategic Plan.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum:
- Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) or Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP Routing & Switching) certification
- Ability to articulate complex technical designs in English
- Eight (8) years of professional experience supporting information systems in a large enterprise technology environment
Required Skills:
- Must have experience on multiple Hardware and Software Environments and be comfortable with complex heterogeneous systems environments.
- Must have ability to share and communicate ideas clearly, both orally and in writing, to executive staff, business sponsors, and technical resources in clear, concise language.
- Capable of organizing and prioritizing tasks based on management request.
- Ability to document findings and prepare reports.
- Competency in conducting accurate situation assessments.
- Demonstrates project management knowledge and experience
- Demonstrated experience in RFP development and evaluation for large scale procurements
Bonus:
BS degree in Computer Science, Telecommunication or related field; (MS degree preferred)
