Uh... I tried. I guess I thought that invitation meant an indie science
panel was not part of the for payment conference, but it *was*.
Our town is usually fairly easy to get around in, but we know that during the SXSW
music festival, and film and interactive also, it's a busy city, with expensive
parking, so I decide to try riding our buses. Bus riding works well and
they are even more than 1/4 full with UT grad students, all walks of life
except the rich, and keeping up with traffic quite well. I am at 4th
and Guadalupe in no time, then walk over to the Omni hotel in my dark brown rain
slicker bought for a trip to Kinsale for a wedding, looking like a
"little city" Austin Texas dweller. Nothing is
going on at the Lone Star room at 3:05PM, so I go out into the atrium
and write up some "elevator speeches" about myself, people watch,
noticing that everyone at SXSW interactive is under 40...and pretty good
looking, or only mildly embarrassingly dressed at worst. Time to go in.
I see maybe 12 people head for the door at about 3:20. I walk toward the
door looking for Cindy Wu, don't see her anywhere and go through, looking
for a seat among a 300 seat and 2 screens room with maybe 30 people in it
so far, and hear behind me, "Do you have a badge?". I say, "You mean,
these panels need a badge? The gatekeeper volunteer says, "A platinum or
interactive or a day pass is required."
I say, "Well, a day pass must cost more than a hundred dollars -- I'm
not going to be able to say hello to the one that invited me after all."
Staring from the gate keepers.
"OK fine, bye..", I say.
I hope many more interested folks turned up for the talks that started at
3:30 CST, (GMT-6), and maybe Cindy Wu and I can say hello face to face
in the next few days.
