By 'two syringe pumps working together' what do you mean?  Pumping concurrently or turning one pump on and the other one off?  Marlin supports multiple extruders on Repraps out of the box, so there's no reason this should be a sticking point...

We want to have at least two syringe pumps - ideally 3 or more - extruding *simultaneously*, which is not something Marlin supports out of the box. So some of the people in the group have been editing the Marlin code to support simultaneous extrusion.

3D printers with multiple extruders typically switch back and forth between extruders. A couple people have done simultaneous extrusion on 3D printers before, e.g. to print out two copies of the same model. It's basically a matter of combining the right electronics, firmware, and G-code generator.
