Yeah, 50 is overkill. I just mentioned laser-cut acrylic since a lot
of hackerspaces seem to have laser cutters these days, so you may have
access to one for cheap. Otherwise vacuum forming is probably the way
to go.
One other random idea - lyophilized enzymes. I know it's possible
because Genomikon ships their T4 ligase lyophilized in little PCR
tubes and I've also seen lysozyme shipped in bulk that way. I'm not
sure how cheap/easy it is, though. It would be super convenient for
people who don't have access to a -20 freezer; store it in their frig
and rehydrate a small amount when they need it. Although, maybe
enzymes actually survive hydrated in a refrigerator for a long time,
I've never tried.
