Hi Matt, 


The kind of work I see myself really enjoying is the startup environment. I would really like contributing to an exciting project and gain valuable experience solving lots of new problems. I would love to start working as soon as possible but I would hate to be in a technician position for my whole career and not get much real research experience. It appears like it would be a good investment to do graduate school, if I want to be able to really contribute to research. 


Im 22 and from sylvania (right outside of Toledo) and I attended BGSU studying biology for 2 years and then transferred to University of Toledo to do Bioengineering and I will graduate next spring. I've been to Cleveland a few times and always enjoyed it, what part are you from?  


Also tell me about your education and work experiences that you have had and any advice you would give to me at this point in my journey.

John has a necessary but one dimensional view of biotech start ups. The venture capital / professional money comes in quite late. About 5-7 years after formation. Most biotechs will have operated on Phase I / Phase II SBIR research grants for the first 3-7 years. These are very fun companies to work for. They are so flat there is no hierarchy ... everything is a problem that needs to be solved. Will you ask and answer your own research question? No. Will you contribute meaningfully to the team and the project? Yes. Plus if you're smart you can get equity options that will be valuable once the finance guys show up.
