How about a conditional GMO? Cre lox site type flanked genes, genes that are run/expressed in parallel with native genes with a terminator function under a presence or absence of some chemo-taxant? Ie. Excise under chemical/temp influence?
Clearly not a DIY project anymore. And it's hypothetical to begin with.
