Re: [DIYbio] Re: Homemade DIYBio: LB medium

Hi William, how you doing?

I found this place where you can buy it (I bought stuff from them myself some time ago), but it is 3 times more expensive per weight than Patrik suggested.
Bodybuilder's products sounds like something fun to try.

I think  Patrick is right. Is much easier to get LB agar from ebay or similar resources.
In case you want a homemade version, Cathal is right with the bromelain enzyme.
In my experience, using supplements products for bodybuilders can give you some problem. Once I tried a brand that made a big mess when I autoclaved it.

How difficult is it to actually order LB powder over eBay or Amazon in your country?

One of the hits I see is $34.71 for half a kilogram, which is enough to make 20L of LB broth, or $1.74 per liter.

I know it's fun to plan for how to grow E. coli after the zombie apocalypse when all human civilization (or at least eBay and Amazon) has broken down. But for any real-world application, I would look towards buying dirt cheap and easily available commercial LB powder first.

I know microbiological supplies are much more strictly regulated in other countries though. Just wondering how widespread a phenomenon that is. And how many of those countries regulate LB powder, but not yeast extract?
