[DIYbio] Fwd: Open Wetlab Grand Opening and DIYBio Europe meetup

Hello everyone,

On June 21st Waag Society opens the Open Wetlab, a community life sciences laboratory for makers, designers, artists, diy biologists, scientists and citizen scientists. After a number of years and projects propagating art-science interactions at the intersection of biology and biotechnology the Open Wetlab will be Waag Society's own 'open and wet' laboratory facility in proximity of the Amsterdam Fablab. Open as in Open Source hardware and Open Source protocols; Wet as in laboratories where living biological matter is handled and as in OpenWetware.

2 days prior to the opening of the Open Wetlab a workshop by Dr. Jennifer Willet of Incubator Art Lab of Windsor University will take place in the Amsterdam Amstel Park and the Open Wetlab. For those who remember the "Bug Quest" idea from the last meetup in Paris: this is exactly that.

All European DIYBiologists are kindly invited to come over to Amsterdam, participate in the workshop and grand opening party (please RSVP via the links below). Apart from the work in the park and the lab, there will be plenty of space to have demonstrations, meetings, experiments and opportunities to explore the city. Amsterdam Yeast Cultivation - 3-part workshop by Dr. Jennifer Willet

The goal of this workshop is for participants to cultivate samples of yeast from their local environment – to grow these samples over a few days at home – allowing participants to see for themselves organisms that are usually not visible to the naked eye. This lab serves to remind us that our civic environment is a complex ecology teeming with life in many forms.

Participants will receive a brief introduction to contemporary BioART practices, and information on yeast. They will lean how to make Potato Dextrose Agar (the medium required for cultivating yeast) with ingredients purchased from grocery stores; How to swab yeast samples from their surroundings; and sterile technique. They will receive a brief introduction to biosafety – and finally create their own bioart project growing yeast in concert with other materials.
