I wouldn't recommend plants as a home based venture unless you are willing to fork up a fairly serious chunk of time and cash to gain experience in working with them. Getting a plant to do anything is tough enough, making something profitable is a whole different animal. Do you have any particular project idea or area of focus in mind?
Something that's technical like tools for science, vectors for bacterial expression, fun educational kits, and making experimentation more open and affordable through alternative means and rethinking the way conventional molecular bio is done are just a few of the things I've noticed people on the list are working on. If you do care to dabble in plant biotech, id be more than happy to throw in my two cents and a few anecdotes.
To quickly whip something up and flip a profit, especially in this kind of R&D (general biotech) is tough to say the least.
