So what could be the solutions to this issue which erodes the public's confidence in science? What are the basic tenets of science that need to be protected in a science publication system? How do we support ethical research and publication?

We've seen an explosion in the number of journals many of them with the sole unstated goal of making money. In addition, some pharmaceutical companies have funded the creation of journals to manage their marketing. University libraries have long struggled with their limited budgets and where to draw the line on journal acquisitions. Researchers are under huge pressure to publish. Careerism is rampant. The publication systems does have a base cost (ignoring profit margins for corporate publishers) and those cost need to be factored in if we were make the system viable. What are the needs of the stakeholders that are important to cater for in a new system?

If you were to rip it apart and reimagine it, how would it look?

Cheers,
Scott
