[DIYbio] 15 days Internship Programme Tools and Techniques in Applied Bioinformatics | 19th July - 2nd August 2021

Warm Greetings from BIOCURATION
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. The key areas of bioinformatics include biological databases, sequence alignment, gene and promoter prediction, molecular phylogenetics, structural bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics.

Course Content:
  1. Literature Search Using Pubmed and Medminer
  2. Sequence Retrieval from Nucleic Acid and Protein Databases
  3. Sequence (FASTA and BLAST) Searches – Analysis of Parameters Affecting Alignment.
  4. Pair Wise and Multiple Alignments of Sequences – Analysis of Parameters Affecting Alignment.
  5. Evolutionary Studies / Phylogenetic Analysis – Identification of Orthologs and Paralogs.
  6. Restriction Mapping, Primer Design and In Silico PCR
  7. Identification of Functional Sites in Genes / Genomes.
  8. Mutation prediction and analysis Find promoter sequences and TFBs in gene
  9. Pattern Elucidation in Proteins Using PROSITE and STRING
  10. PDB Structure Retrieval, Visualization and Protein modeling and structure evaluation
  11. Molecular viewer RASMOL, PyMol and Chimera
  12. Active sites, Motif and Domain prediction of protein
  13. Molecular docking and evaluation: protein-protein docking and protein-ligand docking (Computer aided drug designing)
  14. Microarray data analysis

Benefits In Learning Bioinformatics Key Skills

Generally, a bioinformatics specialist is responsible for managing and analysing large sets of genomic data. The setting where that data analysis takes place can vary quite a bit, however.

In the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industries, work typically involves exploring the human genome to detect how drugs may impact certain proteins within the body's cells. Work often happens in a laboratory setting.

In Botany and Zoology, the analysis focuses on animal and plant genomes and terrestrial data such as elevation and water availability, with an overall focus on environmental health and conservation. Professionals may work in a lab or out in the field.

In academia, bioinformatics careers are related to experiments that may not have an immediate commercial benefit but could be used to drive future investigations in medical or biological research.
