Have you guys done any interesting experiments with the dinos yet? We'll be trying out some DIY growth media for them. Since the nutrient supplements are mainly nitrate by weight, we figured we'd check some plant fertilizers.
We did a small preliminary experiment earlier, showing that all three of the plant fertilizers seemed to work about as well (or better) than the f/2 MicroAlgaeGrow nutrients we're normally using. Just filled some 200ml tiny water bottles, let them grow for a few weeks in our grow box on a timer, then taped them all onto a stick so we could shake them simultaneously, and had a couple of people vote on which was brighter. :-)

Still plenty of space in my "Glow-in-the-dark Dinos!" class tomorrow evening at BioCurious. Bioluminescent dinoflagellates, that is! Come learn about these cool single-celled algae that give off flashes of light when disturbed. We'll show you some amazing videos of the bioluminescent waves they cause, talk about the science behind them, and what we're doing with them in the bioluminescence community project at BioCurious.
Bring a clear glass or plastic bottle - everyone gets to walk home with some pet dinos to play with! If you got some dinos from our booth at MakerFaire and have gotten attached to them (admit it!), bring them in and we'll refresh their water.
Open for all ages. These little single-celled dinos make surprisingly good pets for kids and adults alike.
